The FDA defines expanded access, also known as "compassionate use" or a single patient IND, as the use of an investigational drug outside of clinical trials to treat patients with serious or life-threatening conditions. Expanded access may be appropriate when:

• The patient has a serious or life- threatening condition

There is no satisfactory alternative treatment

The patient can't enroll in a clinical trial

• The potential benefits to the patient outweigh the risks

Providing the drug won't interfere with clinical trials

The FDA has different forms for requesting expanded access, including:

• Form FDA 3926: For individual patient requests, including emergencies

Forms FDA 1571 and 1572: For other expanded access submissions, such as intermediate access or treatment INDS
